Diploma (Flexible Learning Day) 19.11.09

Where Do I Start...

Well today was flexible learning day but it weren't like the other it was even better!

Our theme today was indian/bollywood dancing music. Two professional Indian muscisians came into our school today to teach us the basics on how to make an Indian beat. We are going to use the beat we make up to perform our bollywood dance to later on in the term.

First we met them & gave us introduction they also peformed to us a little sample of Indian music. The intruments they used for this were a tabla & a shitar. Afterwards they split the class into three groups percussion, voices & instrumentals. I was in the percussion group were we were taught some indian singing words "Dha Ghe Na Ti Na Ke Dhi Na". In that group we used a variety of drums. At fourth lesson all the groups got together we listened to what we all had got up to then discussed a way to put all three groups pieces together. When got that all organised we practised it over & over again to get the best sounds.

At fifth lesson we gathered up again to record it. The instruments we used were bongos, dholaki, tabla, african drums, keyboards, shitar, dulcima, violin & saxaphones. When we had done recording it we listened to it. I thought it was really good.

I rEally Enjoyed Myself ... Today Was Really Fun! =D

Pantomime Research 10.11.09

PANTOMIME - A UNIQUE BRITISH ENTERTAINMENT

Pantomime is British. No one else has it, and it is a marvellous and wonderful (if a little eccentric!) British institution.

Pantomimes take place around the Christmas period and are nearly always based on well known children's stories such as Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty etc. Pantomimes are performed not only in the best theatres in the land but also in village halls throughout Britain. Whether a lavish professional performance or a hammy local amateur dramatic production, all pantomimes are well attended.

Audience participation is a very important part of a pantomime. The audience are encouraged to boo the villain whenever he enters the stage, argue with the Dame (who is always a man) and warn the Principal Boy (who is always a girl) when the villain is behind them by shouting out "He's behind you!".

An example of audience participation:

Wicked Queen in the pantomime version of Snow White. "I am the fairest of them all"

Audience - "Oh no you're not!"

Queen - "Oh yes I am!"

Audience - "Oh no you're not!"

Slapstick is another important part of a British pantomime - the throwing of custard pies, the ugly sisters (who are always played by men) falling over, lots of silly costumes including of course, the pantomime horse which is played by two people in a horses costume.

By the end of the pantomime, the villain has been defeated, true love has conquered all and everyone lives happily ever after.

So how did this curious British institution come about?

Pantomime literally means "all kinds" of "mime" (panto-mime) It is generally acknowledged that British pantomime is modelled on the early masques of the Elizabethan and Stuart days. In the 14th century the early masques were musical, mime or spoken dramas, usually performed in grand houses although by the 17th century they were really no more than an excuse for a theme party.

The timing of the British pantomime at Christmas and the role reversal of the lead characters (the principal boy being played by a girl and the Dame by a man) may have also evolved from the Tudor "Feast of Fools", presided over by the Lord of Misrule. The feast was an unruly event, involving much drinking, revelry and role reversal.

The Lord of Misrule, normally a commoner with a reputation of knowing how to enjoy himself, was selected to direct the entertainment. The festival is thought to have originated from the benevolent Roman masters who allowed their servants to be the boss for a while.

Annie Get Your Gun Theatre Review

The play I'm going to review is called 'Annie Get Your Gun'. It was written by Irving Berlin, produced by Leslie Asplund & directed by Richard Jones. I saw the performance on 20th October 2009 at a theatre called The Young Vic. This play is a musical.

'There's no business like show business'!

'Annie Get Your Gun' is about the life of Annie Oakley (1860-1926), who was a sharpshooter from Ohio.

Frank Butler was the best broadway sharpshooter in Ohio. Frank comes to a motel in Ohio & challenges to a shooting competition. All the maids in that motel drooled over Frank He was very good looking. Annie & her physic Dolly went round selling their wares e.g. birds. They decided to try the motel that Frank was staying at. She got there & met up with the manager. Annie didn't know how to count so the manager made a deal. The deal was that if Annie beat Frank she would but all her wares. So Annie was up for it & so was Frank. The competition began & to Franks shock Annie beat by 1 gunshot. Frank has NEVER been beaten. Instead of Annie getting all her wares sold n winning $100 Franks crew invited her to become patners with Frank & start doing shooting roadshows with him.
Frank & Annie Fall In Love Although neither of them ever admitted that Annie was a better shooter than Frank. This happy relationship doesn't last that long Frank soon starts to get jelous especially when Annie shows off her new trick.

This really got to Frank, it hurt him so bad he quit his job. Annie suffered a real heartbreak but she was strong she carried on doing what she good at. Life without Frank was great Annie travelled all over the world & recieved many pure gold & diamond badges. Sady her shooting roadshows start to collapse as she has become bankrupt.
The only hope Annie could think of was meeting up with Frank & becoming a team again. She had her doubts about all these beautiful girls in white gloves, So she herself wore white gloves & a stunning (American Flag Design) dress with all those sparkly badges consuming it.
They were both excited to see each other but the sight of those badges put Frank off. They started arguing their conclusion was that they would have a shooting competition again. The twist here is that if Annie wins she looses Frank but she doesn't want to look dumb. So her friends sneak her gun and break it a bit so that it doesn't shoot straight. However the ending is happy Annie & Frank fall into an unseperable loving relationship.

My favouritre character is Annie played by Jane Horrocks , this is because she came from nowhere to something huge & she always stayed strong no matter the test & trial she faced. The Scene I enjoyed the most was when Annie showed off her new trick & she recieved the wrong response from Frank & he left her. I liked this scene because it was very emotional & it got me slipping of the edge of my seat. Ultz was the set designer and Nicky Gillibrand was the costume designer. The costume that outshined all & caught my eye was the dress made out of the american flag. I found that dress outstanding & very creative it was nothing I expected.
I believe this plays audience is mainly females because there are a lot of romatic scenes another reason is the main character is a woman. I think the age range for this play would be 13 & over.

I really enjoyed this performance 5 star quality!

Recommend This Play To Anyone Trust Me You'll Love It. =D

Unit 2 Diploma Dance & Drama (10.11.09)

Hey Ya'll !

Guess what from now on us diploma students can wear our own clothes to school every tuesday. This is because when we wear our uniform we carry around to many many bags which our heavy. So our teacher came to a conclusion that we should wear suitable clothes that you can do practical work in.

''I AM SOOOOOOOOO HAPPY" !

... Anyways getting back to what happened today.

The lessons we started of with were dance.

Today in dance we started of with a few games & danced to a few 80 & 90s retro songs. After that we got into our groups and wrote stuff down that reminded us of winter. Next our teacher came round to both groups & gave 4 different types of poems to do with winter. We had to pick one and analyse it. Our group chose a poem called winter beauty. We took some words out & thought of how we could use the in our dances. Afterwards we started to make up moves & name them, In the end we made a complete dance & peformed to the rest of the class. Finally after watching the peformances all the groups had to decide what props they would be bringing in for the next lesson. My group decided to bring a mug, pillow, blanket, teddy, hat, scarf, gloves & a mirror.

In drama today we rehearsed our plays & portrayed them to the rest of the class. We discussed our costumes & typed up a to do list.

Today was fun i really enjoyed rehearsin the play & i learnt new skills in dance today, i never thought of analysing a poem to make up a dance. I am preally proud of the work i had done today & can't wait for next lesson.

Winter !!!Tuesday 3rd November 2009)

Heyy Guys !

It's A new term at school & our diploma theme is ''winter".

All the Diploma Students Were Split In Two To Groups. One Group Will Do Media(Photography) & art(artefact: sculpture or mosaic), whilst the other group do dance & drama.

I was chosen to do drama & dance. In drama we are doing A pantomine there are 16 students In my class so our teacher put us into groups of 8. Each group is doing a different panto. Group A (which I am in) are doing a play called Dick Whittington and his Crazy Cat. Group B are doing a play on Cinderella. We will be performing these play at a range of local primary schools.

My group & I looked through the cast & picked who was playin who. I am playing Dick. I can't wait for these road trips. After that we ran through the script, we all enjoyed it. Next we thought about our costumes and props. Our conclusion was that we would all wear black leggings & a black t- shirt on top of that we would wear bits & bobs that would represent our character.

In the afternoon we had dance. The last week of the autumn term we had a flexible learning day. On this day all the diploma students got together and composed 3 pieces of music based on winter. We used A variety of instruments for example keyboard & steel pans...
Getting back to dance our teacher had given given group A & B one of the music pieces to listen to. The song she chose for each group were the songs we had to make up dances to. In our groups we had to brainstorm on themes that were linked with winter. Also we made a brainstorm on thisngs that reminda us of winter e.g snow, hat, scarf & gloves, christmas presents & hot chocolate.

After all the group work we went onto our individual work. Our task was to look up some images that remind you of winter. Finally we had to select our four favourite it was so hard for me because i loved all of them.

I Really enjoyed today. I think this term will be fun because there is a lot of group work & most of the people i rarely work with. So it will be interesting to hear new ideas.
